Grading

My approach to grading is holistic. I focus primarily on the content, and therefore not too critically on the grammar. I especially like to note when I can see overall differences between students' rough drafts and final copies that they hand in. I try to give as much positive feedback as possible, noting any issues as constructive criticism, hoping that students will fix these issues in their next papers--almost like a scaffolding effect.

Students Taking Note

Peer Review Policy

Whenever possible, I like the peer review sessions in my class to be conducted in small groups of 3 or 4. I believe this gives each student more feedback to think about while revising, and it makes sure that each student can get something out of the experience. I also hand out worksheets to fill out with each paper so that major questions will be answered.

Revisions

I give one major paper revision to each student. They can decide which paper they would like to revise for a better grade. I take into account whether or not they go to the Writing Center for tutoring, as well as the differences between the papers handed in. I also ask that students hand in a reflection essay along with their revision so I can understand the choices they made.
